Da quanti anni fotografi e qual’è il motivo per cui hai deciso di specializzarti nella fotografia boudoir ? 

Faccio questo lavoro dal 2009.  Fotografavo famiglie, donne in attesa e neonati da diversi anni, poi ho iniziato a fotografare esclusivamente boudoir nel 2016.

Di dove sei ? Nel paese in cui vivi la fotografia boudoir è un genere ormai diffuso o ancora di nicchia e considerato volgare? 

Viviamo in Delaware, negli Stati Uniti. È un genere piuttosto comune, molte persone fanno questo tipo di foto ma non sono molti a farlo bene o full time. Come ogni altro genere, penso dipenda dall’artista. Il lavora di qualcuno è magnifico, in altri casi è volgare. Dipende dal fotografo e dal livello di gusto.

Che tipo di luce usi più abitualmente ? naturale, artificiale o entrambe ?

 Uso la luce naturale e una speed light per riempire, se serve.

Che attrezzatura usi o che consiglieresti a chi inizia e non ha troppi soldi da investire subito ?

Uso una Nikon. Le macchine fotografiche sono  D750.  Il mio obiettivo è un 24-70.  Non si stacca mai dalla mia macchina.  Consiglio d’investire in obiettivi solidi se si è all’inizio.  La lente fa davvero la differenza.  Io preferisco lenti zoom piuttosto che fisse.  Mi permettono di ottenere più varietà più velocemente.

I tuoi soggetti sono solo donne o anche coppie e uomini ? 

Fotografo principalmente donne. È molto raro che fotografi uomini o coppie.

Credi che sia indispensabile per un fotografo che inizia in questo settore avere un proprio studio ? 

No, fotografo fuori casa mia. Decisamente è molto più economico avere una location solida  e ricorrente. Affittare stanze d’albergo per ogni shooting può essere molto costoso.

Lasci che il tuo soggetto sia spontaneo o punti molto sulle pose già studiate ? 

Dirigo completamente i miei shooting.  Do indicazioni molto specifiche, dall’angolo in cui tenere la testa ai piedi. È estremamente importante, anche lavorando con modelle. È ancora più importante se lavoro con clienti.  

Da dove trai ispirazione ? 

Seguo parecchi altri fotografi boudoir, mi ispirano. Trovo anche ispirazione per delle pose da riviste fashion/glamour. Quando trovo una posa che mi piace faccio una rapida foto col cellulare e la aggiungo a un album che ho creato sul mio telefono.

Domanda facoltativa: vendi solo le foto digitali ? file digitali + stampe ? o anche packaging tipo scatole /usb?  nella tua esperienza a cosa è piu interessato il tuo cliente tipo ? 

Vendo collezioni e in gran parte album. I miei clienti comprano principalmente album. Molto di rado, alcuni clienti comprano solo file. Se stanno investendo nel mio lavoro li incoraggio a comprare qualcosa di particolarmente bello da guardare.

Qual’è la difficoltà che riscontri più spesso ? 

La parte più difficile è trovare un equilibrio tra vita e lavoro. Lavoro molto, certe volte troppo. Mio marito è fantastico, mi tiene ancorata a terra e mi ricorda quando ho bisogno di staccare e concentrarmi sulla famiglia.

How many years have you been shooting and what’s the reason you decided to specialized in boudoir photography?

 I have been in business since 2009.  I Shot family, maternity, and newborn for several years and then started shooting boudoir exclusively in 2016.

Where are you from? In the country you’re living in is boudoir photography a common genre or is it a niche and considered as tacky?

We live in Delaware in the United States.  It is a fairly common genre, there are many people that shoot it but not many that shoot it well or full time. Just like any genre, I think it depends on the artist.  Some work is gorgeous and then some is tacky.  It depends on the photographer and level of taste.

What kind of light do you usually use? Natural, artificial or both?

 I use natural light and a speed light for fill as needed.

What kind of equipment do you use or would you recommend to those who are just getting started and don’t have too much money to invest right away?

I shoot Nikon. My bodies are D750.  My work horse lens is a 24-70.  It never leaves my camera body.  I recommend investing in solid lenses if you are just starting out.  The glass really makes a difference.  I prefer zoom lenses over prime.  They allow me to get more variety faster.

Do you just shoot women or even couple and men?

I shoot primarily women.  I will very rarely shoot men and couples.

Do you think it‘s essential for a photographer who starts in this sector to have his own studio?

No, I shoot out of my house.  It is definitely more cost effective to have a solid and consistent location.  I can be expensive and cost prohibitive to rest hotel rooms for every shoot.

Do you let your models be spontaneous or do you focus on particular poses?

 I completely direct my shoots. I give very specific direction, from the angles of their head the whole way to their feet. This is extremely important, even when working with models.  It is even more important when working with clients.

Where do you get inspiration from?

I follow many other successful boudoir photographers.  They inspire me.  I also will get posing inspiration from fashion/glamour magazines.  When I find a pose that I like I will take a quick cell pictures and add it to an album I have on my phone.

Discretionary question: do you just sell digital photos? Digital files + prints? or even packaging such as box/usb? In your experience what your typical customer is most interested in?

I sell collections and mostly albums.  My clients mostly purchase albums.  Very rarely, does a client just purchase files.  If they are investing in my work I encourage them to purchase something gorgeous to look at them in.

What ‘s the difficulty you find most often? 

The most difficult part is finding work/life balance. I work hard – sometimes too hard.  My husband is wonderful and grounds me and reminds me when I need to check out and concentrate on family time.
